By Ilissa Banhazl, MFT-
Group therapy is when 8 adults meet once a week to talk. Usually the group is focused on a specific topic such as grief and loss (bereavement), eating disorders and body image, parenting, singles, divorce, couples or women’s support.
I facilitate these groups by generating topics, providing information and assuring that exchanges are respectful. Members of a group will introduce topics, share personal stories and give and receive support from other members and myself. Group therapy is a wonderful adjunct to individual counseling or sometimes just a group by itself may be what you want and need.
Dealing with issues is always easier when you surround yourself with others who are experiencing similar experiences and feelings. Groups turn into small caring families and each group is unique. They meet for an hour and a half in the evenings in my office in Glendora. We meet for 8 weeks and then reevaluate whether to continue or say goodbye. Even if we end the group many friendships made in-group continue long after group has ended.

Before the group starts I will meet with you individually at no charge. This gives us time to explore your situation and to choose the right group for you. At that time I can explain to you more about your group so you can decide if you want to join. Groups are safe and confidential.
